Federal prosecutors have reportedly filed criminal charges against Rep. George Santos (R-NY).
According to CNN, which reported the news on Tuesday, Santos is expected to appear in federal court as early as Wednesday.
The nature of the charges were not immediately clear as they remain under seal, but federal prosecutors from the Eastern District of New York have been looking into his finances, CBS News reported back in December.
Voters elected Santos, 34, to his first term representing New York’s 3rd Congressional District in the November elections, helping Republicans win a narrow majority in the House.
But increasing scrutiny of Santos led to the freshman congressman admitting that he lied about aspects of his career and personal life. Facing multiple investigations as well as calls to resign among members of his own party, Santos stepped down from his committee assignments in January.

“He has reserved to see it until he has been cleared up both campaign and personal financial investigations,” a spokesperson for Santis said at the time.
Last month, Santos filed paperwork for a re-election bid in 2024.
