Hochul Responds To Zeldin Demanding Criminals Be Locked Up: ‘I Don’t Know Why That’s So Important To You’

New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) gave a surprising response during a gubernatorial debate Tuesday night against Republican nominee Lee Zeldin over Zeldin’s insistence that criminals be locked up behind bars.

“I stated that the first day that I’m in office, I’m going to declare a crime emergency and suspend Castles Bail and these other pro criminal laws, because there is a crime emergency,” Zeldin said. “My opponent thinks that right now there’s a polio emergency going on, but there’s not a crime emergency.”

“Different priorities that I’m hearing from people right now, they’re not being represented from this governor who still to this moment, what are we, half way through the debate?” Zeldin continued. “She still hasn’t talked about locking up anyone committing any crimes.”

“Anyone who commits a crime, under our laws, especially with the changes made to bail, has consequences,” Hochul responded. “I don’t know why that’s so important to you. All I know is that we could do more.”

LEE ZELDIN (R): Yeah, I mean, listen, I stated that the first day that I’m in office, I’m going to declare a crime emergency and suspend Castles Bail and these other pro criminal laws, because there is a crime emergency. My opponent thinks that right now there’s a polio emergency going on, but there’s not a crime emergency. Different priorities that I’m hearing from people right now, they’re not being represented from this governor who still to this moment, what are we, half way through the debate? She still hasn’t talked about locking up anyone committing any crimes.

KATHY HOCHUL (D): Anyone who commits a crime, under our laws, especially with the changes made to bail, has consequences. I don’t know why that’s so important to you. All I know is that we could do more.
